UKZN students caught with dagga

2014-04-12 00:00

TWO UKZN students and a suspected drug dealer were bust as they allegedly smoked dagga in a closed theatre at the university’s Westville campus on Thursday night.

Provincial police said on-site campus security guards were told that three people had entered a disused building at the campus. Spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the security guards found the three smoking and dealing in dagga. “Two suspects were students at the institution and the third one had been banned from the institution. The university is investigating how he had gained entry to the campus. We cannot comment further on the case as investigations are at a sensitive stage,” said Zwane.

The three were charged for dealing in drugs. About half-a-kilogram of hydroponically grown dagga valued at R15 000 was found hidden. The three men, aged between 20 and 23, are expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court soon.

Lesiba Seshoka, the university’s executive director of corporate relations, said, “Indeed university management is shocked that the sanctity of the campus, where students and staff engage in academic activities, has been violated by individuals who police inform us were dealing in drugs. Security has been beefed up. We urge parents to advise their children against any forms of drug or alcohol abuse. We appeal to students to consult with our qualified counsellors in clinics on all the campuses for advice and guidance.”
