UKZN top Pinetown in Challenge League

2014-02-27 00:00

DESPITE picking up their 12th bonus-point win of the season in the Challenge League Stream 1 on Sunday, Pinetown Cricket Club look set to finish runners-up to the high-flying UKZN.

This time around, Pinetown finished off Umzinto by six wickets in a low-scoring encounter at Lahee Park, but while they were grabbing a full house of points, UKZN were doing the business against Quins, to remain four points ahead of Pinetown with two matches remaining.

Pinetown’s success was set up by left-arm quick Andrew Dyer, who burst out of the blocks with his maiden five-wicket haul of the season, as he ripped through the top order to claim 5-32.

Supported by fellow opening bowler Kyle Gilham (3-15), there was no denying a rampant Pinetown as they had the visitors back in the hut for 87 runs.

Dyer and Gilham bowled their 10 overs in succession, allowing the Umzinto batsmen no rest as they faced 20 overs of hostile pace.

In effect, the contest was over before it had begun, and given that Pinetown looked a touch sloppy toward the end of proceedings, allowing a last-wicket partnership of 23 with three dropped chances and a total of 26 wides in the mix, the South Coast outfit could consider themselves fortunate to achieve what they did.

An unusually nervous start to the chase saw Pinetown lose the consistent Bruce Kruger and 2013 SA Colts member Jason Oakes cheaply, before opener Jamie Koen (22) and debutant Shane Lacon-Allin (23) got the ship on the right course.

Kyle White’s undefeated 22 wrapped up matters in the 18th over for a full house of five bonus points.

UKZN pulled off a seven-wicket win against Quins, chasing 118 for victory.

Batting first, Quins could only muster 117, with Sheldon Swanepoel the only batsman to resist with 31. For the students, Cameron Gordon claimed 3-22 in his 10 overs.

As has been the case for most of the season, the Wissing brothers, Richard (39) and Gareth (35), blasted away to set up the win and the points.

The win keeps UKZN at the top of the standings on 68 points from 16 matches, with Pinetown on 64. Simplex Reservoir Hills complete the podium with a distant 50 points.

This weekend, Pinetown play their penultimate round against Simplex Reservoir Hills at Siripat Sporting Complex.
