U.S. singer pays tribute to veteran DJ Zondi at PMB jazz event

U.S. jazz musician Chris Walker paid tribute to veteran radio DJ Eddie Makhosonke Zondi on Saturday, crediting him with introducing the muso to South African audiences.

Walker pulled a huge crowd during the inaugural Pietermaritzburg Jazz Festival at the Golden Horse Casino, joined by legendary South African music couple Letta Mbulu and Caiphus Semenya.

Walker said he would have never been known by South Africans if it was not for Zondi, who died in June. “Eddie introduced my music to South Africans and that is why I am here. If it was for not him, I wouldn’t be here. I salute his memory,” said Walker.

He had the crowd of about 8 000 people swaying to the beat of his old school music, a touching moment for the scores of people who braved the rather chilly winter’s night to attend.

Mafikizolo and songstress Lira were also a big hit with young and old in the crowd, who danced the night away.

“This was a best event show for Pietermaritzburg and they need to make sure that it’s always on this standard,” said music lover Nwabisa Mda.

Organiser Brian Zuma said the attendance showed that people are hungry for entertainment in Pietermaritzburg.
