Ugandan on abortion charges back in court over alleged fraud

2011-12-06 00:00

JUST weeks after his release on bail arising from charges that he posed as a doctor and performed illegal abortions, Ugandan national Jonathan Kinane (27) in court in connection with a fraud charge yesterday.

The charge sheet alleges that he and another Ugandan national, Ivan Patrick Kigeni (32), appeared defrauded a woman of R103 000 by pretending they were professional doctors who had powers to communicate with her ancestors.

The fraud was allegedly committed between August and October this year.

Kigeni’s case was postponed for further investigation for seven days.

Magistrate Reard Abrahams ordered Kinane’s immediate release when it emerged that police contravened the law by keeping him in custody at the weekend when they could have brought him to court on Friday.

The Witness confirmed that police immediately re-arrested Kinane — as they are entitled to do — in the court cells. He is expected to make another court appearance today in connection with the fraud charge.

Kinane was charged earlier this year with having given women drugs in order to illegally terminate their pregnancies.
