Ugu launches R11,5 mln beach clean-up

THE Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Rejoice Mabudafhasi, launches a R11,5 million Working for the Coast project at Park Rynie today to beautify the beaches in Ugu district.

The launch is part of the International Coastal Weekend Clean-up being held from today to dunday. The clean-up covers the coastal stretch from Umthamvuna to Umkomaas that comes under Ugu District Municipality and its three local municipalities, Hibiscus Coast, Umdoni, and Umzumbe.

The long-term project will focus on cleaning up and rehabilitating the coastline by removing invasive alien plants, maintaining pedestrian walkways and boardwalks and placing more refuse bins that will regulalry emptied.

The Beekman Group has invited the public to join its own clean-up, which starts at 8 am tomorrow and covers the area from Port Shepstone to Southbroom.

There will be two pick-up and drop-off points — the Banana Express ticket office in Port Shepstone and St Mike’s Beach parking lot.

Data capture sheets will be handed out to record what rubbish is collected.
