Ugu told to fix its sewerage

2012-09-28 00:00

UGU District Municipality is due to be slapped with a second directive today, as the Department of Water Affairs take steps against it over the management of its sewerage works.

While the last directive related to Margate’s three sewerage pumps being out of order simultaneously, leading to the closure of the town’s beach, today’s is more general.

“It’s more to do with preventive measures,” Angela Masefield, DWAF’s director of water regulation and use, told The Witness.

The directive is the first step in the process towards prosecution in terms of the National Water Act, she explained.

Margate’s beach re-opened this week just in time for the holiday season, having been closed for three weeks.

It was the third spill in nine months, one of which caused it to lose its Blue Flag status.

New pumps for the Margate pump station are expected to arrive before the Christmas holiday season.

Masefield said a meeting would be scheduled early in October to review compliance with the directive.

Ugu spokesperson Sipho Khuzwayo could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press.
