Ugu warns politicking officers to be neutral

2011-03-29 00:00

THE Ugu District Municipality has reminded councillors and officials that using municipal funds for electioneering or party political purposes is prohibited.

This was noted at a full council meeting after the tabling of a circular from the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube, last week.

Dube said “It is noted with concern that certain municipal councils and municipal officials are participating in the election processes from a party political perspective in the build-up to the local government elections that are due to be held shortly.”

Because the matter and its implications are so serious, municipal managers must ensure that the circular is tabled before the executive committees and councils of all municipalities, she added

Dube said word has reached her department that “food parcels and possibly other items bearing political party insignia are being handed out by certain municipal councils and/or municipal officials as part of campaigning for the impending elections”.

Dube said municipal services must be provided impartially.
