Uitenhage: tussle over cold Coke

2010-02-10 00:00

PORT ELIZABETH — Amid the heat wave gripping the country, a half-litre of Coke became more valuable than ever in Uitenhage on Monday.

Six men battled in vain to steal the ice-cold cool-drink from a woman.

The drama started when Mildred Jansen went to sit under a tree to enjoy her ice-cold Coke.

A man approached and asked for money to buy bread. Jansen held up her cool-drink and told him that was all she had.

He went to call two of his friends and returned. Again Jansen refused to share anything with them, least of all her cool-drink.

Then they grabbed not only her cool-drink, but also her bag. Jansen started screaming and clung to everything, even when they started dragging her to the middle of the road.

When she called out, “Help! I’m being robbed!” three more men joined the fray and tried to get the Coke.

The struggle moved closer to the taxi rank and some men ran to help her.

The Coke robbers were quick to run away, but bystanders pinned them down.

One of the “robbers” was hit by a passing vehicle.
