Umdoni recognised for green efforts

2010-12-21 00:00

UMDONI Municipality has again been recognised as the best municipality in terms of leadership and planning in a competition hosted by the Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development (DAEARD).

The award recognises excellence in service delivery in the fields of urban and rural refuse collection, environmental protection, landfill management and innovative alternative energy strategies.

At the awards ceremony, Umdoni Municipality was presented with a trophy, a certificate and a cash prize of R100 000 by the MEC for Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development, Lydia Johnson.

During October 2009, a panel of experts comprising officials from the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, DAEARD, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, and the Department of Water Affairs were given a detailed presentation by Umdoni Municipality on its relevant activities and achievements.

This was followed up by the panel conducting an inspection at various locations across the municipality, including taxi ranks, public recreational areas, beaches, residential areas, commercial nodes, low cost housing developments and rural areas. The aim of the inspection was to determine the level of cleanliness, ecological health and aesthetic appeal at various locations throughout the municipality.

Receiving this prestigious award at council, Umdoni Mayor N.H. Gumede, said: “Umdoni Municipality is humbled by this award, which recognises the hard work and commitment of the municipality. The prize will be utilised in projects geared towards preserving our environment in respect of cleanliness. We view this achievement as a milestone in acknowledging our efforts towards service delivery and are encouraged to reach even greater heights in the delivery of service excellence.”
