Umhlanga SARS offices shut after fire in building

2012-02-13 00:00

THE 250 taxpayers who visit the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Mount Edgecombe offices in Umhlanga every weekday will have to use the Durban or the Pinetown offices for the next few weeks.

The office block where the Umhlanga offices are caught fire at the weekend and was seriously damaged. No injuries were reported.

Spokesperson Adrian Lackay said the SARS offices were shut for safety reasons, but weren’t damaged.

“We do not own the building; we are just renting space there with other government departments. The fire started on the fifth floor and we are in the basement … so nothing burnt in our offices. We were just affected by the water and the smoke.”

Lackay urged the 250 customers on average who use the Umhlanga office daily to go the Durban or Pinetown offices for the foreseeable future.

“At this stage we are waiting for the safety inspection before we can move back in and we anticipate that it will be a few weeks before those offices are ready.”

Attempts to get comment from the Durban Emergency Services were unsuccessful.
