Umlazi: sand miner fined

2011-09-29 00:00

THE Umlazi Magistrate’s Court yesterday fined Mfundo Manzi (45), owner of Doller Mining Trading cc, for quarrying sand from the banks of the Umlazi River.

Magistrate Leon Ferreira fined him R20 000 or 11 months’ jail on the counts of mining without a permit and failing to comply with the directive of the Department of Mining Resources.

A further fine of R50 000 or 15 months’ jail was suspended for five years on condition that Manzi is not convicted of the same offences.

The magistrate said illegal mining cannot be tolerated because it causes enormous damage to the ecosystem and the environment in the province.

A Department of Mining Resources spokesperson, Bheki Khumalo, said a further 116 cases of illegal mining have been indentified in KwaZulu-Natal.
