Umzimkhulu: Six girls targeted

2012-12-17 00:00

YOUNG girls in the Umzimkhulu area are at increasing risk of abduction over the holiday season.

This is according to a statement issued by the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE), which said it received a complaint last week from a civil society organisation in Ematsheni, Umzimkhulu, requesting urgent intervention.

The statement says six schoolgirls between the ages of 15 and 20 have reportedly been targeted for ukuthwala (the abduction and forced marriage of predominantly underage girls) by older migrant workers in the area.

“It was alleged that there is a list in circulation with the names of the girls, and that some of their parents are collaborating with these plans to marry them off.”

The CGE has called on the provincial authorities to act promptly to protect the girls, investigate the allegations and prosecute the perpetrators.
