Uncertain future for Hiddink

2009-10-08 00:00

MOSCOW — Guus Hiddink is uncertain whether he will continue on as Russia coach when his contract runs out at the end of 2010.

“I’m not getting any younger,” the 62-year-old said yesterday.

Russia take on Germany on Saturday in a crucial World Cup qualifier and Alexei Sorokin, chairman of the country’s football federation (RFS), said it made sense to wait and see if the country qualifies for the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa before making a decision.

Hiddink, who has been at the helm in Russia since 2006, said he is “ruling nothing out” and did not expect any decision before his side’s final qualification game against Azerbaijan yesterday. Meanwhile, Arsenal star Andrey Arshavin warned that if the Dutchman did decide to leave, it could result in the break-up of a high-performing Russia team that made it to the semi-finals of Euro 2008.

“Without Guus, there is no team,” he said.

Russia are just one point behind Germany in group four and will ensure qualification for South Africa with wins in their final two matches.
