Unfilled vacancies: KZN to employ 1200 new junior nurses

2010-11-24 00:00

THE KZN Health Department will be employing 1 200 staff nurses and assistants around the province soon, 70% of them recruited from private nursing colleges.

According to the District Health Barometer of 2009, in 2008/09 the average nursing clinical workload in South Africa was 23 patients per nurse per day.

In his progress report to the provincial legislature last month, Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said that between April and September, 2 535 critical posts in all categories were filled.

However, this has not made a great impact on the vacancy rates, which at the end of September were as follows: professional nurses — 28,4% (11 178 filled and 4 424 vacant); medical officers — 52,4% (1 938 filled and 2 136 vacant); specialists — 72, 4% (453 filled and 1 188 vacant) and pharmacists — 73,7% (424 filled and 1 190 vacant).

Dhlomo attributed the global healthcare skills crisis to the poaching of health workers by developed countries.

Department spokesperson Chris Maxon said recruitment will continue as long as there are vacancies to be filled.
