Unified KZN football-league structure needed

2011-08-16 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL Schools’ league football operates in silos between former model C, private, township and rurual schools. It has now entered it’s third week, and administrators are working tirelessly to find a uniform league structure.

This emanated from the first KwaZulu-Natal sports indaba, organised by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sports and Recreation, held at Durban’s Suncoast Casino last week.

Gregory Fredericks, the doyen of schools’ football, urged the authorities to bury the hatchet by sorting out their differences, and involve senior government if needs be.

“No schools should continue to play separately because of their financial background. Sports should cut through those barriers once and for all,’’ said Fredericks.

Midlands schools, under the auspices of the South African Schools Football Association (Sasfa), started their matches at the beginning of August, as did private and former model C schools.

Today, Edendale and Imbali Secondary Schools will play their matches at Indumiso Sports Grounds.

KwaPata take on Bongudunga, while Nyonithwele host Amakholwa.

Siyahlomula, the provincial double champions of Metropolitan U16 league, are up against McDonald district champions Edendale Tech, and Smero host Georgetown.
