Unisa students angered by exam set on wrong text

2015-02-10 00:00

THIRD year engineering students at Unisa have laid an official complaint after they had to write a final year exam based on study material they had never seen.

The students complained about the exam paper for the subject Surveying 1. More than 200 students across South Africa had registered for the subject, one student said.

The student, who prefers to remain anonymous, said the group had been using one text book all year, but the exam was based on another text book that was not part of their syllabus.

The students said almost the entire class failed. Another student who spoke to sister paper Beeld said the exam which was not based on their study material had wasted their future.

The student told how he got a disappointing 30% for the paper while his practical average was 90%.

“I went to complain after the exam and was told the mistake was noted and we would rewrite in January.”

The group have since written another exam on January 29, but have lodged a complaint against the lecturer, whom they said was only doing “half a job” in class.

Unisa spokesperson Martin Ramotshela said the matter was now in the hands of senior managers.
