United: Mystery newcomers at pre-season

2010-07-06 00:00

AS expected, a couple of new faces at Woodburn Stadium outer fields marked the first day of Maritzburg United,s pre-season training yesterday.

However, the new players are not household names; nor do they come from big clubs.

United are targeting, among other players, utility Wayne Matle from Kaizer Chiefs

They also hope to have midfielder Kurt Leintjies back from Mamelodi Sundowns after an impressive loan spell last season.

The two players were conspicuous by their absence yesterday, and so was Bafana Bafana goalie Shu-aib Walters, who will be moving permanently to the City of Choice after signing a three-year deal last week.

Club CEO Afzal Khan said Walters has been given a week off following many months away from his family due to Bafana commitments.

Besides former Thanda Royal Zulu right-back Joseph Kibe, others spotted working hard to impress coach Ernst Middendorp were a player from England and one from Brazil.

Khan would not reveal their names, he said, “because it’s still to tell if they will be signed”.

Defender James Madidilane, midfielder Noah Chivuta and striker Brice Aka, who were put on transfer list, were reunited with the tea. Khan said the club is yet to receive offers for them.

It is said that Aka was almost on his way to AmaZulu, but the arrival of coach Manqoba Mngqithi has seen the deal put on hold.
