United: Reports of Middendorp leaving denied

2010-12-16 00:00

MARITZBURG United have denied a report that their coach, Ernst Middendorp, might be on the way out of the club, possibly with a return to China in mind.

A report in the latest edition of the football weekly SoccerLaduma claimed Middendorp might be considering a move to the Chinese Super League, where he once had a six-month stint with Changchun Yatai in 2008.

However, Maritzburg chairman Farouk Kadodia said the coach has denied any intention to leave the club.

“I saw the story at about 7 am this morning and I called Middendorp to ask him about it,” Kadodia said yesterday.

“His response was very strong, that he has had calls from people in the last two months from clubs in China, a team fighting relegation in Germany and other places like Ghana enquiring if he would be interested in jobs there.

“Middendorp said that he has told all of them that he is contracted to Maritzburg United and he could not even negotiate with them.

“I asked him very strongly if anything like this were in the pipeline then would I be informed, and he said that I would be the first to know.”

United play Free State Stars at Harry Gwala Stadium tomorrow night in their next Premier Soccer League match.
