United clash with Royals called off

MARITZBURG United’s Nedbank Cup last-16 game against Temba Royals has been temporarily called off.

PSL spokesperson Lux September said the Nedbank Cup organising committee met yesterday morning to deliberate on the matter and decided it was in the best interest of the competition to postpone the fixture.

“This is in the wake of the on-going arbitration between Tembu Royals and AmaZulu,” said September.

Usuthu had asked the PSL to investigate reports that the Eastern Cape side had used an ineligible player when the minnows won the clash between the two sides in Durban last month.

The player in question is Zukisa Ginya, who Royals said had joined them from a club in East London.

United’s commercial manager Younus Kadodia told Weekend Witness yesterday that “everyone at the club was disappointed”.

“We’ve been preparing for this game for the last week, so it’s disappointing that it’s been called off at the last minute,” said Kadodia.

The team were supposed to leave for Mthatha at midday yesterday.

“We insisted with the PSL that they inform us of the outcome before the team left for Mthatha because it’s a nine-hour drive.”

Kadodia said they would wait for the investigation to be completed before knowing when and where the game would be played.

Should Royals be found guilty, they stand the chance of being kicked out of the competition, which would see the return of AmaZulu.

However, Royals’ media officer Zuko Zono said AmaZulu’s “delaying tactics” were in vain, and they would not be reinstated into the competition.

“They won’t play in the Nedbank Cup because they lost. There is no case against us. It’s never been heard of for a result to be overturned after a game has been played because of a complaint,” he added.

On a good note, United defender Mohammed Awal spoke of his joy on receiving another call-up to the Ghana squad.

The 24-year-old stands a chance to win his third international cap when they take on Sudan in a World Cup qualifier.

“It’s not easy to get into the Ghana team because we have a lot of good players in and out of the country, so I’m happy to get into the team,” he told Weekend Witness.

He said he would work to ensure that he became a permanent fixture in the Black Stars side.
