Unrest: lack of finance skills blamed

2010-03-26 00:00

LACK of financial management skills in most South African municipalities is the main reason behind service delivery protests taking the country by storm, said South Africa’s Accountant-General, Freeman Nomvalo.

He was speaking at a celebratory dinner organised by the African Women’s Chartered Accountants at Durban’s Elangeni Hotel on Wednesday.

The dinner was held to honour young black women who had passed their final qualifying examinations to become chartered accountants.

Nomvalo said most municipalities do not have suitably qualified or experienced people in financial management positions, and this has led to their inability to properly manage their finances, and, in turn, has led to service delivery protests.

He urged the newly qualified accountants to join the government and public sector to help ease the crisis, and called on them to restore integrity and honour to the profession.
