Usuthu one step away from final squad

THE acquisition of a big central defender will almost complete new AmaZulu coach Manqoba Mngqithi’s endeavours to put together his squad for the coming 2010/11 Premier Soccer League season.

With the Durban side set to finalise talks over the signing of two goalkeepers, SuperSport United’s transfer-listed Dennis Onyango and FC Cape Town’s Thembalethu Moses, and confirming the signing yesterday of Namibian winger Tangeni Shipahu, only a central defensive position remains unresolved for Mngqithi.

According to AmaZulu general manager Peter O’Connor, Usuthu were hoping this week to put to bed the issue of the goalkeepers.

“Moses is already training with us after passing his medical. What is left now is the finalising of paperwork before he’s officially ours. As for Onyango, talks with his agent are at advanced stage,” said O’Connor.

“Besides the goalkeeping department, we are frantically searching for a big central defender who will fill in Kapamba Chintu’s place. After bringing on board the Namibian winger, the coach feels he’s okay in the strike force department.”

O’Connor said AmaZulu have scoured the local and foreign market in search of a central defender.

The move for the two keepers is necessitated by the proneness to injury of rising goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela and the transfer listing of Zambian Kakilo Kakonje and Argentine Nicolas Gindre.

Shipahu, who has joined AmaZulu from Namibian Premier League side Tigers FC, is the fourth confirmed signing for Usuthu.

Others are former Moroka Swallows and Thanda Royal Zulu winger Bongani Mbele, central midfielder Andile Khumalo and forward Sthembiso Dlamini.

The club will hold their player awards function at Durban’s Playhouse tomorrow evening.

The Player of the Season award will be contested by rookie striker Ayanda Dlamini and defender Pere Ariweriyai. Mzimela, Warren Bishop and Smanga Biyela are in line for Most Improved Player.

Meanwhile, former Bafana Bafana international striker Sibusiso “Rhee” Zuma was yesterday reportedly expected to make a shock return to the PSL for Cape Town rookies Vasco da Gama.

Zuma returned to Denmark for FC Nordsjallend last season after an expensive and unsuccessful spell with Sundowns.

Still on the transfer front, former Orlando Pirates star Steve “Chippa” Lekoelea was among the triallists at National First Division Coastal Stream outfit African Wanderers’ training session in Durban yesterday. Abaqulusi have invited a number of ex-PSL players for assessment.

Wanderers’ management have bought Bay United’s franchise and are keen to make a mark in the division following their unsuccessful years in the Second Division.
