Uthukela district health is powerless

2011-08-05 00:00

THE Uthukela health district building has been without electricity for three weeks after the bill was not paid to the local municipality.

An inside source said the provincial Health Department has not paid the electricity bill for the district office, which led to the cutting-off of power from the offices.

“Employees struggle to carry out their daily duties since the electricity supply was cut off due to problems with the service agreement between the municipality and the Health Department.

“We can’t tell for sure what the problem is or how much is owed to the municipality.

“This doesn’t make it easy for us who have to deal with huge volumes of electronic documentation,” said the source.

Another employee, who asked to remain unnamed, said a generator provided by the department does not produce sufficient electric power for the entire building.

District spokesperson Bonga Hlomuka said the electricity disconnection was due to the late payment of the service level agreement subsidy.

Hlomuka admitted that the district office has been running without electricity since July 13. “There was a delay in the payment of this subsidy. According to our records we do not owe the municipality anything.

“The late payments were generated due to the agreement being signed late by either the municipality or provincial health.”
