Uvongo: Sniffer dog helps find R27?380 worth of drugs

2011-11-08 00:00

SOUTH Coast police swooped on the car of a West African man in Uvongo on Friday and arrested him when they found drugs to the value of R27 380 in the car and at his home. The car was impounded.

Christopher Victor appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of drug possession. The case has been adjourned until November 14 for a bail application.

The joint operation was conducted by members of Margate police, Port Shepstone’s K9 Unit and organised crime unit after police received a tip-off that the drugs were in transit.

Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said that Sergeant Stanley Holloway and his narcotics dog, Corrie, searched the vehicle.

“A false compartment in the chassis of the vehicle was pointed out by the dog and the drugs were found hidden there.”

Four mandrax tablets, 40 ecstacy tablets and 56 parcels of powder cocaine were found in the hidden compartment.

“A follow-up search was conducted at the suspect’s residence in the Ramsgate area where more cocaine and dagga were found,” said Wiid.

Warrant Officer Abraham Sonnekus of the organised crime unit was the arresting officer.
