‘Vampire’ suspect arrested

A 25-YEAR-OLD man who allegedly sucked the blood of his victim and is wanted in connection with a triple murder at the Sacca informal settlement last year was arrested by police in Imbali on Monday.

On December 17 last year, the suspect (whose name is known to The Witness) allegedly went on a rampage at the Sacca settlement and shot three people dead.

He allegedly injured Thokozani Mkhize and, according to reports, sucked his blood.

He is alleged to have shot Dumisani Khumalo (44) in the head. Vusi Mngwenyama (35) was discovered lying in the middle of the road with a gunshot wound to his neck, and Mlondolozi Mbanjwa (19), who was found lying in the bush along a footpath, had a gunshot wound to the head.

The only survivor of the rampage, was Mkhikze. He was the first victim of the suspect.

Mkhize told how the man shot him in the arm and drank his blood.

He said he was confronted by the suspect, who demanded everything he had. Mkhize said he complied because the suspect had a gun.

He said that after he gave the suspect everything he was carrying, the suspect shot him and Mkhize fled to a nearby house.

Witnesses reported that the attacker sucked the blood gushing from Mkhize’s arm and dipped the bread that he had taken from Mkhize in the blood and ate it.

Yesterday Mkhize said he was very pleased that the suspect had finally been arrested. “I think that it is better that he has been arrested,” he said.

Recounting what had happened, Mkhize said the suspect shot him on the street and he fled to a nearby house that belongs to a member of the community.

The suspect followed him into the house still waving a gun.

“When he came with his gun in his hand, the women inside the house started begging him not to kill me. Instead they fed him meat that they had bought. For two hours we sat there with my arm bleeding while he munched on meat and bread mixing it with my blood.”

Mkhize said he was fortunate that the bullet did not penetrate his bone. “Physically and mentally I am fine and getting back to my old self.”

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the arrest came after the police received a tip-off of the suspect’s whereabouts.
