Van Jaarsveld continues to impress as Dolphins eye One-Day Cup final spot

2015-02-09 00:00

KINGSMEAD lights up again tomorrow night when the Dolphins host the Titans in a playoff to meet the Cobras in the final of the One-Day Cup at Newlands on Friday.

This comes after the Dolphins recorded a 26-run win against the same Titans at Kingsmead yesterday. This was thanks to Vaughn van Jaarsveld’s second successive century in two days, his 101 following Friday’s 105 in the 25-run win against the Cobras.

On a cloudless morning, Titans skipper Henry Davids asked the Dolphins to set the target with a young side that saw Daryn Smit rested and bowlers Robbie Frylinck and Craig Alexander left out because of slight injury niggles. In came KZN Inland spinner and batsman Kyle Nipper, medium pacer Tshepo Moreki and paceman Calvin Savage, the latter making a welcome return to the senior side after a lengthy injury break.

Two quick strikes saw Dolphins skipper Morné van Wyk (0) and Cameron Delport (10) dispatched with the score 36-2 after 6.1 overs.

A struggling Cody Chetty (4) continued to look for runs and after the mandatory opening 10-over powerplay, the hosts were 57-3, needing someone to take charge and guide the ship through the storm.

Van Jaarsveld, batting at three, came to the wicket after four balls of the Dolphins’ innings after Van Wyk departed and continued where he had left off at Newlands. After that innings in Cape Town, Van Jaarsveld credited his performance to Dolphins coach Lance Klusener and the coach must have been more than impressed with what he saw yesterday.

It was an innings of application, patience and solid cricketing sense, the only blot in the copybook being an edge that was dropped at slip and went for four when he had scored eight.

With Nipper (31) he added 72 for the fifth wicket and 66 for the seventh wicket with Savage (43), departing with the score on 224, the seventh man out, holing out to Jacques Rudolph at long-off soon after reaching his seventh List A hundred. He faced 118 balls, hitting two sixes and six fours, a measured knock. Thanks to his contribution, the Dolphins posted a respectable 261 all out in 49.4 overs at a run rate of 5,25 to the over.

Tomorrow’s match starts at 3 pm.
