Van der Dussen shines for Lions

2014-11-29 00:00

AN unbeaten century from Rassie van der Dussen enabled the Highveld Lions to beat the Titans by one run in their Ram Slam T20 match at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom, yesterday.

The visitors, chasing 180 for victory, finished the day on 178 for six, despite the efforts of an unbeaten 69 from Heino Kuhn.

The Lions innings started off in the most unfortunate manner, losing two wickets in the third and fourth overs.

Caribbean import Chris Gayle was caught by Junior Dala on the third-man boundary off Ethy Mbhalati, and Temba Bavuma was run out going for an non-existent run. And the Lions were in trouble on 16 for two.

Van der Dussen and Lions captain Neil McKenzie inspired the retrieval with a 117-run partnership for the third-wicket.

Van der Dussen, brought into the team when Gayle was injured, scored a magnificent 61-ball 101, which included two boundaries and six maximums, enabling the Lions to reach 179 for three.

The Titans, in search of the 180 they needed to triumph, got off to an ideal start but were soon 70 for three, losing three wickets for seven runs. Kuhn and Heinrich Klaasen made a resolute effort to regenerate the innings with a 66-run stand for the fourth wicket.
