The 36-hole Maritzburg Open golf tournament, sanctioned by the KZN Golf Union, was held on Sunday at the Victoria Country Club, and Chris van der Merwe, on his home course, secured the double.

This tournament usually attracts the best golfers in the province and being an “open”, golfers from further afield are permitted to participate.

There were 80 players in three divisions, with the A division totalling 40 players of handicaps from + 3 to 3.

The tournament was played in glorious weather with the golf course in superb condition.

The leader after 18 holes was Daniel Green with a level par 71.

M. Irwin was in second spot with a 73.

G. Gerrard and Chris van der Merwe both scoring 74’s.

The afternoon round saw Gerrard withdraw because he was feeling unwell, and Green was disqualified.

Irwin added another 73 to his morning round to finish on 146 and in third place.

Cameron Munro of Umdoni shot a two-under-par 69 to add to his earlier 76 for a total of 145 and second position.

Van der Merwe, on his home course, finished in spectacular style by holing his bunker shot for eagle at the 18th hole.

His four under par 67 was the best round of the day and a total of 141 secured the trophy by four strokes.

This win gives Van der Merwe the distinction of a Maritzburg double in winning both the Closed and Open championships in consecutive weeks.
