Vandalism, theft add to power woes

Some areas within the province are still without electricity or water as a result of the storms that wreaked havoc more than a week ago.

The uMgungundlovu District Municipality has urged its citizens to be patient as they are working around the clock to restore water supply in local municipalities that fall under them.

In a statement released on Friday, municipal manager Sibusiso Khuzwayo said there has been interruption in water supply in some areas as a result of power failures caused by the storm.

In some areas, he said, there has been theft of copper and vandalism that has put added strain on the infrastructure and compounded a volatile situation.

“The mostly affected areas are within uMshwathi, including Swayimane, Cool Air, Dalton as well as Mkhambathini.

“I would like to assure residents that since electricity has been restored, all water pumps are now working and the water reservoirs have started filling up. However, due to the fact that capacity of the reservoirs was very low, it is going to take some time before normal water supply is completely restored,” he said.

He apologised for the inconvenience caused and appealed to residents to be patient.
