Vandiar confirms switch to the Lions

2008-04-15 00:00

KZN Dolphins and SA U19 batsman Jonathan Vandiar confirmed yesterday that he has moved to the Highveld Lions.

Vandiar, in a brief conversation with The Witness yesterday, cited the positive influence on his burgeoning career of current Lions and SA U19 coach Ray Jennings as the main reason for his move.

He would not be drawn any further on his feelings about leaving the Dolphins or on the duration of his Lions’ contract.

However, Dolphins CEO Cassim Docrat said he understood the senior contract, a rare achievement for a player just out of school, was “apparently for three years” with a get-out clause after 12 months.

Docrat confirmed that the Dolphins Pro20 semi-final against the Eagles had been switched from Sunday afternoon to this Friday evening.

Cricket SA said yesterday a combination of weather forecasts and conflicts with other sports events to be televised by SuperSport had prompted the change, which was agreed upon by all parties.

The Dolphins, whose remarkable four-match unbeaten run had swept aside their two early losses and clinched second place and a home semi-final, will now meet the Eagles from 6 pm at Kingsmead on Friday, while Newlands will host the other semi-final between the Cobras and the Titans from 2.30 pm on Sunday.

Dolphins chief of selectors Jay Naidoo was unavailable for comment, but Docrat said the same XI who had played the Lions last time out, plus Said Mhlongo and David Miller, were again in the frame for the semi-final.

“Hashim Amla arrives back in Durban today and he will also be added to the semi-final squad,” said Docrat.

The Dolphins supremo said Eagles stars Jacques Rudolph and Ryan McLaren would not be playing, as they had already returned to their county teams, but top run-scorer and holder of the fastest strike rate this Pro20 series, Loots Bosman, would be playing, in spite of his commitments to the Indian Premier League.

Meanwhile, SuperCricket reported that star bowler Dale Steyn might be moving to the Cobras, apparently because Cape Town is his girlfriend hometown. However Titans CEO Elise Lombard said all of their Proteas players — Steyn, AB de Villiers, Andre Nel, Paul Harris and Morne Morkel — were remaining at Centurion.

Lions top-order batsman Blake Snijman and fast bowler Basheer Walters of the Eastern Cape are new Titans signings.

Dolphins: Doug Watson, Grant Rowley, Imraan Khan, Morne van Vuuren, Johann Louw, Ahmed Amla (capt), Jon Kent, Daryn Smit, Pierre de Bruyn, Alfonso Thomas, Yusuf Abdullah, David Miller, Saidi Mhlongo, Hashim Amla.

Final Pro20 log: 1 Cobras 24 pts; 2 Dolphins 18 pts; 3 Eagles 16 pts; 4 Titans 14 pts; 5 Lions 9 pts; 6 Zimbabwe 8 pts; 7 Warriors 4 pts.
