Variety Club wins Champions Mile

CAPE Breeders Club reports that South Africa’s top horse, Variety Club, scored a scintillating victory HK G1 Champions Mile at Sha Tin in Hong Kong on Sunday.

The Beaumont Stud-bred superstar became the first international horse to win the HK$12 million (R16 million) race, and, in doing, so, confirmed his status as one of the finest milers in the world.

In scoring an effortless four-length win in the 1 600 m race, Variety Club stamped himself as a leading contender for the Gr1 Breeders Cup Mile at the end of the year.

However, the magnificent chestnut is likely to have a rest, before possibly taking in the Group One Prix de la Foret on Arc de Triomphe weekend.

Second to outsider Helene Spirit early on, Variety Club made his move at the top of the straight — and the race was then all but over.

The chestnut champion drew off to an easy four-length win, over favourite Able Friend and Dan Excel.

Among the also-rans in the Champions Mile were the likes of Glorious Days (G1 Hong Kong Mile), Gordon Lord Byron (G1 Prix de La Foret), and California Memory (G1 Hong Kong Cup — twice).

Partnered by regular rider Anton Marcus (who has ridden the entire in his last 16 outings), Variety Club stopped the clock in 1:34,11.

Variety Club who was coming into the race off a success in the Gr2 Godolphin Mile has now won 17 of his 23 outings to date.

The horse has also amassed six Equus Awards, and, is without doubt one of the finest thoroughbreds ever produced in South Africa.

The champion, making his first start for new trainer Mike de Kock, has now won 10 of his last 11 outings, and has won three of his four international races to date.

Sunday’s win took Variety Club’s tally of feature race wins to 13 — in three different countries — and he has now captured five Grade One contests, and is unlikely to stop here.

Variety Club is a son of Avontuur- based stallion Var.
