Varsity escape defeat by one point

2012-05-16 00:00

THE Maritzburg Varsity first XV stretched their unbeaten run to four matches and retained second place in the Fidelity Security Moor Cup when they edged Harlequins 25-24 after leading 10-6 at half-time in a heart-stopping premier division encounter at Peter Booysen Sports Park.

In a match played at high pace, either side could have won this one, as three tries apiece and a number left on the table will attest.

FNB Varsity’s pack were dominant for the most part, but showed signs of weakness at times. A lack of patience and indifferent execution cost both teams more than the four-try bonus point. Five of the six tries went to elusive Quins left wing Dean Lovett (3) and hard-running Varsity right winger Yandisa Mdolomba (2). Varsity lock Chris Ndlovu celebrated his first match for the Whites this season by scoring the match-winning try.

Meanwhile, Ricoh PMB Collegians went down 54-3 to College Rovers in Durban, which represents the second-lowest defeat against the runaway log-leaders this season.

PMB Collegians chairperson Tony Day told The Witness that the Rovers don’t commit to rucks and mauls “and if you drop the ball 10 metres from their try-line they will score at the other end before you have wiped the dust out of your eyes”.

At 3 pm on Saturday, two Fidelity Security Moor Cup fixtures will be played in PMB, instead of on separate weekends.

At Woodburn Ricoh PMB Collegians play Durban Collegians for the first time in 16 years at this level. Entrance is free and a Castle accompanies the purchase of a boerewors roll, while spectators can join the players to watch the Sharks afterwards.

In Golf Road, FNB Maritzburg Varsity host a Family/Alumni Day in aid of the Jess Foord Foundation.
