Varsity hockey sides draw 4-all in a thrill-a-minute showdown

IN a thrill-a-minute match, Maritzburg Varsity came back from a two-goal deficit with two minutes left to draw 4-4 with Durban Varsity at Glenwood Astro on Tuesday night.

This KZN Men’s Super League hockey match had all the skill, drama and excitement you could wish for, with PMB netting first off a penalty corner in the third minute, which was upgraded from a free-hit by Beijing Olympic Games umpire Gary Simmonds of Durban for verbal abuse.

Three minutes later, Simmonds dealt out green cards to each captain, warning both sides that verbal abuse, which is becoming a major concern in SA men’s hockey, will not be tolerated.

A green card was dished out to Durban’s Teigan Mulholland for a breakdown tackle midway through the half. Ironically, Durban equalised a few minutes later after a breakdown tackle by PMB in their own 22 was upgraded to a penalty corner by umpire Stephen Nel.

Kevan Demartinis did the damage for Durban with a low drag flick, and two minutes later the home Varsity made it 2-1 when a player was left open at the far post to tap in.

Turning around a goal down, PMB netted a PC to equalise at 2-2, but Durban went into a 4-2 lead and looked to have the game sewn up.

With two minutes left, PMB pulled one back when a run down the right led to a defensive blunder. The ball bounced off a defender and on to the body, advantage was played and PMB flashed the ball home. With 30 seconds left, a Maritzburg free-hit outside the circle saw the ball deflect off a defender’s stick high into a group of players.

The danger convinced Nel to award a PC almost on time. After the hooter had sounded, the PMB drag flick was low and hit the post, leading to a goalmouth scramble. The second shot was saved but the third PMB attempt found its target.
