COSATU general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi yesterday expressed happiness and hope after President Zuma’s speech.

Vavi told the The Witness that Zuma’s speech was “very brilliant and and a welcome intervention from the president of the ANC”.

Vavi said he found it crucial in Zuma’s speech that he had echoed what Cosatu had been calling for — decisive action against members of the ANC who are not discplined.

Zuma had told the delegates that the ANC will act against party members who who are ill-disciplined.

Vavi said that factions in the party can no longer be allowed to prosper.

He also supported Zuma’s call that juniors should respect their seniors in the organisation.

“This is not just a political statement, but also a social one: those who are young should respect their elders …”

Vavi said that after Zuma’s speech, everyone was all smiles. He described the ANC president as a true leader.

“I am telling you that most people will sleep very peacefully today. He is a leader, he rises to occasion and that is what he did today,” Vavi said.
