Vavi is targeted for criticising govt, says Numsa leader

2013-03-08 00:00

COSATU secretary-general Zwelinzima Vavi is the target of a “poisonous, cruel personal and political attack” because he has taken a stand against e-tolling, corruption and other government decisions.

This was the opinion of Numsa leader Irvin Jim, addressing the media in Johannesburg yesterday.

“Cosatu decided to say no to the e-tolling system and opposes the use of labour brokers.… There’s not a chance that the ruling class will spare Vavi. They are trying to hang a dark cloud over his leadership,” said Jim.

Vavi has been on the defensive since last week after allegedly being accused at Cosatu’s central committee meeting of financial impropriety.

He says his enemies are conducting a smear campaign, because of, among other stands, his outspokenness on corruption.

Jim said Numsa won’t “whisper” when it does not agree with the ANC on issues like the National Development Plan.

“Some people like us, others will do everything in their power to attack us, but we have a mandate from our members.”

He said the attacks on Vavi were intended to divide and weaken the labour federation.
