Vehicle licensing facility planned for city centre

2012-08-17 00:00

BY early next year, Pietermaritzburg residents will be able to save on travel costs as Msunduzi Municipality brings facilities for renewal of vehicle licences to the city centre.

The matter was brought before the executive committee (Exco) meeting for noting yesterday.

Residents in the city have always used the Mkondeni provincial licensing and testing grounds to renew driver’s licences and vehicle licences, which means taxi commuters have to take two minibuses to get to Mkondeni.

Kwenza Khumalo, a senior official, told Exco a business plan had been submitted to the Department of Transport and several premises had been identified that could be used to renew driver’s licences and professional driving permits used by taxi drivers and heavy goods vehicles, loaded or empty.

“This is not unique to Msunduzi as other municipalities have been using these facilities to bring services closer to the people,” Khumalo said.

“Once the facility is up and running, the provincial and national departments of Transport will from time to time check the premises to see if we comply with  the law.”

This was in line with the municipality’s turnaround strategy to broaden services in the spirit of co-operative governance, he said.

Khumalo added that the development would also bring in much needed revenue while providing convenient services closer to the city centre.

“If all is done accordingly, we should have this service up and running early next year.”

He said the move would also ease traffic congestion to Mkondeni, as a lot of people used the facility.
