Vendor dies in crossfire at court

2011-09-07 00:00

A STREET vendor died when she was shot outside the Nkandla Magistrate’s Court on Monday as an angry crowd stoned a police van that was bringing a murder and rape suspect to court.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the police were taking Nhloso Mchunu to court for his appearance on two counts of murder and one of rape when the van was stoned.

Police fired rubber bullets to prevent the crowd from getting closer to the van.

It is alleged that some people in the crowd were armed and they responded with gunfire.

During the exchange of fire a street vendor, Elizabeth Mavundla (45), was shot and died on the scene.

Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu condemned Mavundla’s killing.

“I would like to send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. I would also like to emphasise that we are still waiting for the results of the post-mortem to determine if she was killed by rubber bullets or normal bullets.

“The outcome will determine if the Independent Complaints Directorate needs to investigate further. However, I would like to appeal to community members to avoid such confrontations with police because the end results are not good and innocent people end up being killed” said Mchunu

Zwane said police are investigating a murder case and public violence and that no arrests have been made.
