Victim spots her rapists

A CHANCE encounter saw two men convicted of the rape and robbery of a Ladysmith woman, who, while attending court with a friend, pointed out her attackers as they stood in the dock charged with another crime.

Xolani Mazibuko (20) and Mduduzi Hadebe (26) were sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and robbery of the woman at the Ladysmith Regional Court last month.

According to a statement issued by police spokesman Jay Naicker, the woman had been walking on a footpath on her way to the hospital when she was accosted by the two. “She was subsequently robbed and raped at knife point,” he said.

“The incident was reported to the Ladysmith police and they immediately commenced with an investigation. A few days after the rape, police arrested two men for robbery in the same area. After police had profiled the two, they were taken to court,” Naicker said.

He added that while Mazibuko and Hadebe were standing trial in the courtroom, the woman entered as the trial was taking place and she immediately recognised her attackers. The men were arrested as they left the courtroom.
