Victim wants to help rapists

2010-02-24 00:00

PRETORIA — Hettie Brittz, wife of gospel singer Louis Brittz, does not wish to see the men who raped her and robbed her family merely face the wrath of the law.

Brittz said she would rather look them in the eye, talk to them about their choices and how they got to where they are, and help them.

She said this yesterday, just hours after two of the men who are suspected of being involved in the burglary and rape were arrested.

According to police spokeswoman Colette Weilbach, information led investigators to Nellmapius in Pretoria at about 6 am yesterday, where they arrested five male suspects.

After further investigation, two of the men were linked to the burglary and Brittz’s rape.

“The fact that I’ve forgiven them [the attackers] doesn’t mean I don’t believe in justice,” said Brittz.

Brittz was formerly involved in programmes at the Pretoria Central Prison for criminal youths and criminals in their early twenties — men just like those who were arrested yesterday.

“I would very much like them to become involved in these programmes so that I can look them in the eye one day,” she said.

“I do believe these guys can be rehabilitated, but I don’t want them to be walking free in the street.”
