Video: Coldplay’s ‘great escape’

2011-10-22 00:00

IT’S been the buzz of social networks this week.

Coldplay’s new music video for Paradise was released on Wednesday, showcasing lead singer Chris Martin, dressed in a plush elephant costume, embarking on a unicycle trip through the Karoo — among other things.

The clip opens with sun-drenched shots of the South African plains, wildebeest silhouetted against the setting sun. The story then cuts to Martin (as an elephant), jailed against his will in a London zoo, but planning an escape.

He busts out, hops on the Tube and heads towards Heathrow Airport where he sneaks aboard a plane bound for Cape Town.

After procuring a unicycle from some busking (street dancing), he rides through the Karoo, removing his mask at one point to prove it is indeed Martin himself aboard the unicycle.

At sunset on an open plain he discovers his band-mates, who are also all dressed as elephants.

The final chorus ends with actual performance footage from the band’s Johannesburg concert, where they bop and leap in elephant regalia, to an enraptured SA audience.

The video ends with a gleeful slo-mo shot of the band sprinting across the plains, in full elephant regalia.
