Vigilante group terrorises Howick man

2014-09-01 00:00

A HOWICK man was allegedly ordered to strip naked and then dragged by a rope around his neck by members of a suspected vigilante group terrorising Mpophomeni township.

Thulani Zondi (26) was attacked last Wednesday and ordered to remove his pants. When he refused, a rope was allegedly tied around his neck before he was dragged along the ground.

On Saturday, he was again attacked, allegedly by another member of the group, but this time he was forced to run behind a car.

The group accused is called “the forum”, which apparently deals with suspected criminals in the township.

Bhekelakhe Zondi, Thulani’s father, claims his son was attacked after he demanded money from one of the men in the area who failed to pay him for fixing his car. The man then allegedly called his friends, who are members of the forum.

Thulani’s brother Philani, who witnessed the attacks, said. “On Wednesday a member of the forum carrying a rope called Thulani to come to him. He threw the rope and ordered him to put it around his neck, but Thulani refused.

“He then put the rope around Thulani’s neck and then started to drag him around. He was dragging him like a dog for at least another 30 minutes before he assaulted him.”

He said. “On Saturday, I was sitting in the house when I heard someone screaming outside, and a car being revved. I rushed outside and saw Thulani with the rope around his neck tied to the car. The men sped off with Thulani running behind the car.

“He did this twice in a short distance and had Thulani not been able to run, he would have been seriously injured with being dragged,” Philani said.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said they were investigating a case of assault.
