Viljoen, Cook plot Titans’ fall

2012-11-03 00:00

CENTURION — Stephen Cook led from the front with the bat while man-of-the-match Hardus Viljoen was destructive with the ball as the Bizhub Highveld Lions stormed to an astonishing 269-run victory against the Nashua Titans in the opening match of the Momentum One Day Cup at Centurion yesterday.

Cook was in sublime form as he compiled 125 off 122 balls to help his team post a formidable 329 for six on a slightly sluggish Supersport Park pitch.

The Lions then ripped the Titans batting line-up apart, largely due to the performance of Viljoen as he returned figures of 9-3-19-6 to help dismiss the home team for a pitiful total of 60 in 18.5 overs – their lowest ever in limited overs cricket.

Titans captain Martin van Jaarsveld had earlier won the toss.

But the visitors’ opening pair of Cook and Gulam Bodi (71 off 84) put on a superb partnership of 161.

Cook went on to reach his century at just under a run a ball before being run-out courtesy of a mix up with Neil McKenzie (15 off 17).

But Jean Symes (43 not out off 27) gave the Lions’ innings the impetus it needed, and 25 runs off the final over left the visitors in the pound seats as they set the Titans a daunting target of 330 for victory.

The home crowd were then left stunned as Viljoen struck twice in the 12th over to leave the Titans in an absolute mess at 21 for six — still needing 309 runs at a required rate in excess of eight to the over. Remarkably, Viljoen had already bagged a five-for by this stage. SCOREBOARD
