Vimbeni Shembe: tributes pour in

2011-03-30 00:00

TRIBUTES to inkosi Vimbeni Mbuso Shembe, leader of the Ebuhleni faction of the Nazareth Baptist Church, poured in yesterday.

Inkatha Freedom Party president Mangosuthu Buthelezi said he learnt of the death of his “dear friend” with shock.

“Reverend Vimbeni Shembe was a man of deep faith, a great man. He was a man with firm beliefs, who was not afraid to take a stand. Both his intelligence and his religious convictions came into play as he sought his life’s purpose.”

He added that it was one of Shembe’s greatest desires to see the reconciliation of the church during his lifetime and he hopes that his death will inspire members of the church to set aside their differences once and for all.

The national chairperson of the IFP Youth Brigade, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, said Shembe’s death has left a “gaping void in the continuous struggle of instilling genuine morals in us young people, and our common pursuit as South Africans of leading godly lives without negating our African sense”.

The vice-chancellor of the Mangosuthu University of Technology, Professor Mashupye Kgaphola, said the university is “touched by how this incident has affected our students and staff and particularly the people of South Africa”. He said their Nazareth Tertiary Students’ Association has a membership of over 500 students.

Church spokesperson Chancy Sibisi said a statement will be issued today.
