Vintage rally: bikers head for joburg

2012-03-10 00:00

THE DJ rally is on the move, and the organisers are hoping that the potholes are few and the run proceeds as smoothly as possible.

Organisers of the annual DJ Motorcycle Run have decided that for a change the run will take place from Johannesburg to Durban next year, the centenary.

The DJ Motorcycle Run is an annual ride from Durban to Johannesburg of motorbikes with or without a sidecar that were manufactured

before 1937.

The run was first held in 1913 and ran every year until 1936. It was restarted in 1970 and has been held every year since.

The chairperson of the Classic Motorcycle Club, Pierre Cronje, is the clerk of the course and organiser of the event. He told the Weekend Witness the run was one of the highlights of the motorsport calendar.

“The guys are really enthusiastic about this event and just love to catch up with old friends.

“There is a lot of camaraderie associated with this event,” he said.

A lot of planning goes on behind the scenes of getting 118 vintage bike enthusiasts to Johannesburg.

Cronje said that because of the age of the bikes the biggest challenge was finding a route with the least traffic as trucks and buses could disrupt the flow of the run.
