Viral video: search is on for policeman suspected of drunk driving

2015-03-28 00:00

POLICE are searching for the officer who was accused of drunk driving in uniform in a video that went viral on social media this week.

An amateur video of the policeman from Pinetown garnered over 300 000 views since it was uploaded to Facebook on Thursday.

A Durban man recorded his conversation with the officer, after what he described as a “near miss” vehicle collision.

The video prompted a full-scale police investigation and The Witness learnt that the officer in question is based at the Pinetown police station.

The driver who shot the video said that he had exited a petrol station when a vehicle sped past him. Not knowing whether he had hit the vehicle, he followed it and managed to signal the driver to pull over.

After suspecting the driver was drunk, the man filmed his interaction with the officer, who then sped off.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said that they had the video from social media and had launched an internal disciplinary investigation.

“We view the conduct of the police officer in a very serious light and once he is located he will have to explain his conduct to a disciplinary tribunal,” he said.
