Virtual horses in race for charity

2013-07-04 00:00

THE virtual heat was on yesterday, as 10 sporting media personalities competed in the first ever Twitter horse race for charity.

This was all part of Sportingbet SA’s unofficial Durban July in their #BeTheStud charity initiative. For one hour the contenders enticed their followers to tweet and retweet their chosen horse names. The race could be viewed live on the #BeTheStud website, with virtual horses running on a track as the contenders’ tweets were monitored.

Craig Stack, from the blog MyCityByNight, was the winner with his horse name #ElDiablo pulling ahead after being neck and neck with runner up #DirtySeaGull. Stack won R10 000 towards his charity of choice, the JAG foundation, which aims to create change by using sport as a positive tool to combat social issues like drugs, crime and poverty.

Second place went to #DirtySeaGull, belonging to Cale Prissarra from Just Kicking. He received R3 500 for the Dirty Seagulls charity, which brings sport in to communities.

Third place went to Ballz’s Sasha Martinengo who got R1 500 for Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer.

The race was tight and Stack was a surprise winner. He thanked his followers on Twitter for helping him win the race.

Now with the unofficial race over, Sportingbet SA, the country’s largest online sports books, will be focusing on the real Durban July happening this weekend.
