Vodacom: ‘Upgrade could cost firm customers’

2012-03-09 00:00

VODACOM’S planned network upgrade in Pietermaritzburg could cost it customers in the area, said South African National Consumer Union chairperson Tutti Rudman.

“A lot of people use cellphones more than landlines, so they will be affected by the maintenance. Vodacom could be inundated with claims and people skip paying their cellphone bills,” she said.

Vodacom KwaZulu-Natal managing director Alberts Breed told The Witness that customers would not be reimbursed for the service degradation that could occur during the upgrade.

Rudman said the upgrade should have been systematic.

“The maintenance should have been split and the fact that it is six weeks long is ridiculous. They are the biggest cellular provider in the country, but they must tread carefully or they could face the same problems Blackberry faced and they could lose customers because of this.”
