Volvo Golf Champions cash prize increased

2013-11-06 00:00

DURBAN Country Club (DCC) will host one of the European Tour’s most financially lucrative golf tournaments next year after it was confirmed yesterday that prize money for the Volvo Golf Champions has increased by more than 50% to $4 million (around R41 million).

Last year’s tournament, which also took place at DCC, had a purse of $2,6 million.

Next year’s event takes place from January 9 to 12, and its unique nature means that only a select few will be taking part.

Dubbed the European Tour’s “Tournament of Champions”, the tournament is only open to players who have done one of the following: won any fully sanctioned European Tour event in 2013; won the Volvo Golf Champions at least once before; won 2013’s Race to Dubai [European Tour money race]; or won at least 10 European Tour events in total [this only applies to players under 50].

The result of such a system is that only the tour’s best over the previous 12 months will be participating at a DCC course that is already in pristine condition as organisers continue their preparations for the event.

Defending champion Louis Oosthuizen has confirmed his participation for the event, and other big names are expected to join him in the coming weeks.

DCC has hosted the South African Open 17 times.
