Volvo golf event back in DBN next year

2013-10-17 00:00

DURBAN Country Club hosts the Volvo Golf Champions for the second successive year in 2014, from January 9 to 12.

This is the season-opening event of the European Tour. An increased prize purse reinforces the event as one of the most prestigious on the tour.

The format of the tournament sees a limited field, with no halfway cut. It’s open only to European Tour players who have won an event on the previous year’s international schedule. The exception is current Tour members with more than 10 European Tour victories.

Durban Country Club was hailed as an outstanding venue for this year’s tournament and having improved since then, should be in world-class shape for the European Tour’s leading players. The course prides itself as having hosted the South African Open on 17 occasions.

“We are delighted our ‘Tournament of Champions’ returns to Durban Country Club in January next year. It’s a wonderful celebration of our 2013 winners and we look forward to another superb edition of the event,” said George O’Grady, chief executive of the European Tour. “We are thankful for the support of the sponsors, the KZN provincial government and our friends at the Sunshine Tour who play a crucial role in the tournaments we host in South Africa.”

In the same week, the world final of the Volvo World Golf Challenge, Volvo’s global tournament for customers, is contested in Durban. Top finishers from the world final get the experience of a lifetime, playing with the stars of the European Tour on the Friday of the Volvo Golf Champions. This is an opportunity that exists nowhere else in golf.
