Voortrekker second best in St Charles clash

2008-05-25 00:00

The relatively early start to the match may have been the reason for so many errors by both sides, but home team St Charles had the better of the game with a 27-14 win over Voortrekker.

It was never a dull affair as both teams were willing to move the ball and play switched from one side to the other. St Charles dominated the lineouts and, quicker to the breakdown, they had the better of possession and territory.

Early in the game, wing Tee Mthembu went over for the first try comfortably converted by Potgieter, who added a penalty for St Charles to lead 10-0. Potgieter then weaved magic by running 35 m, outstripping the cover defence, to score under the poles, making his conversion a formality for a 17-0 lead with 10 minutes of the first half still to play.

A kick ahead by St Charles, into the Voortrekker 22 m area, was marked by Hartwich Marx. He immediately tapped and set off, making space for flyhalf Ruan Booysen, who had enough pace to go over for the first try for Voortrekker. He converted his own try on the stroke of half-time (17-7).

Potgieter increased his personal contribution to 15 when he converted a second penalty, increasing the St Charles lead to 13 points (20-7). A few minutes later, St Charles attempted to run out of trouble, but made an error which was capitalised on by the Voortrekker attackers and a kick ahead, found wing Raynaard van Rooyen first to dot it down. Booysen added the extra points for the gap to narrow to six points (20-14).

It was a mistake by Voortrekker in the closing minutes that allowed St Charles to score their final try and seal victory. Flank Toko Sokhela was quick to attack from an attempted clearance kick, scoring the third try for the home side. Potgieter converted and St Charles had won 27-14 in an entertaining contest.
