Voortrekker’s 19th Sports Festival set to draw good crowd

2010-03-20 00:00

THE 19th Voortrekker Sports Festival, with rugby, girl’s hockey and netball, takes place today. This year, because of the early start to the rugby season and normal fixtures taking place, the top-level schools are not participating.

As normal, the matches involve under-14, 15, 16 and open, with seven games in the open division on the main field.

The main match is the home side, Voortrekker, against Ladysmith, with the game preceding it Port Natal versus Pionier. These two matches are likely to draw a good crowd.

Rugby will kick off at 8 am with Wartburg playing Durban Academy.

There are two matches in KZN which should both draw good crowds, the first at Balgowan, where Michaelhouse play traditional rivals Hilton, and the second at Maritzburg College, who host Kearsney.

Michaelhouse will be going for another victory after winning the double in the last two years. They have pace in the backline and are willing to spread the ball. Hilton are likely to play more to their forwards.

Emile Schwarz, who played wing for the SA U18s in 2009, will be marked closely, as will the two Michaelhouse centres Patrick Howard and Dean Box.

Westville travel to play Northwood and they are likely to build on their winning margin against Kearsney last week. Northwood have been the weakest of the top teams in the province in recent years and will do well to keep the scores relatively close.

The young St Charles team travel to Durban to play DHS. While St Charles’s defence did improve last week, as the match against Hilton progressed, they may struggle against a very competitive DHS team, who have speedy backs.

Fixtures at Voortrekker: Wartburg vs Durban Academy; Ixopo vs Greytown; Kokstad vs Kingsway; Kuswag vs KZN Development XV; Weston vs Dundee; Port Natal vs Pionier; Voortrekker vs Ladysmith

Fixtures (home side first): Michaelhouse vs Hilton, Maritzburg College vs Kearsney; Northwood vs Westville; DHS vs St Charles; Dale vs Glenwood; George Campbell vs Clifton; St Henrys vs Hillcrest; Werda vs Suidnatal; Grantleigh vs Treverton.

Other matches (venue unknown): New Forest vs Pinetown; Queensburgh vs Brettonwood; Port Shepstone vs Amanzimtoti; Scottburgh vs Crawford NC; Grosvenor vs Crawford LL.
